Elementary Classroom
My host teacher read a book about the Liberty Bell and then had the students watch a step by step video on how to draw it. The visual forms were integrated by learning and producing art in the classroom. The theme used was
American Symbols and the Liberty Bell was just one of the three drawings the students did for their American Symbols Book. The students were working with narrative when they read the book and observation when they watched the video. I would integrate writing and have the students write a fact or two about the symbol. The teacher only had the students do the Liberty Bell, Bald Eagle, and Statue of Liberty. I would have my students include the U.S. Flag, the Washington Monument, Mount Rushmore, and the White House. While the students were working on the project I could have them listen to the Star Spangled Banner since it goes with the theme. I could have the students listen to the Preamble to the Constitution. In order to integrate Math I could have the students vote which American Symbol is their favorite and then have them create a bar graph showing the classroom data.

Art Classroom
The art teacher had the students sit around the smartboard while she did a mini lesson on the U.S. Penny. Then she gave a demonstration on how to make a penny out of clay. The verbal objectives she gave were to make sure the penny had relief (was raised), had the words “In God We Trust” on the top, and had the year. The resource she used was a picture of the penny on the smartboard. The students were bored and wiggling during the presentation but started to have fun once they were using the clay to create their penny. The classroom atmosphere is portrayed as chaotic because the students are constantly up and running around showing the art teacher their penny. The art teacher’s behavior management was pretty good except she didn’t have good control over some of the students. The classroom teacher does a better job a keeping the students engaged and presenting her lessons with interaction from the students so they pay attention. The classroom atmosphere in the classroom is calm and more structured because if the students have a question she has them raise their hand. When the students are working the teacher puts light calming music and it seems to help the students. The student’s behavior is better with their classroom teacher because they seem to listen to her more than anyone else.
